The International Plan was launched in 2005 to offer a challenging academic program that develops international competence within the context of your major. Companies are increasingly looking to hire students who understand the global economy and international relations are able to function effectively in multi-national work environments, can assimilate comfortably into different world cultures, and know how their discipline is practiced in an international context. While many students gain some exposure to these aspects of today's world through traditional international opportunities such as study abroad and international internships, the International Plan is designed to develop a deeper level of competency in these areas both generally and within the context of your major.

Requirements
How can students satisfy the International Plan requirements?
The International Plan is not intended to be an add-on to the current degrees. Degree requirements are not modified, but are satisfied with specialized courses and appropriate choices of elective courses. Each participating major has developed at least one sample curriculum showing how students could complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Science with the International Plan. However, student participants have a variety of options in terms of language study, location of international experience, and type of international experience for meeting the International Plan requirements, so these schedules are only suggestions that show some of the ways students could plan their degree. Please seek advice from the IP faculty representative in your major or the IP advisor. The IP faculty representative in your major must approve your overall plan.
I will stay in my host country after my internship or Study Abroad Program ends. Will this time count towards the 26 weeks of International Experience?
No, days overseas before and after official start dates of international experience do not count toward your IP program.
Do holidays that take place within the official period of the International Experience count toward the IP?
Yes, standard holidays that take place while you are involved in the International Plan do count toward your International Experience.
I am visiting the U.S. for school; can I study in my country of origin and receive credit for the International Plan?
No, students whose normal residence is outside the U.S. may not complete the International Experience in that country unless granted an exception by the IPC. In such cases, the proposed International Experience should clearly demonstrate how it will contribute to achievement of the International Plan objectives.
Can I incorporate classes or orientations I will be involved with in terms of my IP toward my overall International Experience?
Yes, structured experience relevant to the international experience that occur before or after the official start date/end date must be approved in writing by the appropriate academic unit.
Can AP credit from high school courses count as one of the three core courses?
No, only courses taken after high school can count toward your core classes.
Can international experience obtained before arriving at Georgia Tech count toward the International Plan?
No, the IP courses and experience is only fulfilled at Georgia Tech.
What are the requirements for admission to the International Plan?
* Students wishing to participate in the International Plan must submit the completed application and be accepted into the program.
* Applicants must be GT students in one of the participating majors.
* There is no GPA requirement for first semester freshmen applying to the International Plan. All other applicants must have at least a 2.5 GPA at the time of application.
* The International Plan is intended for students in their first four semesters of college level study. Students who have already completed more than four semesters of college level study in one of the participating majors may still apply. Such students should include information in their application about the requirements of the International Plan that they think they have already completed, and information about how they would fit in completion of the remaining requirements prior to intended graduation. These applications will take longer to be reviewed, but each will be considered by the student's major school and by the International Plan Committee, and a notification of the acceptance decision will be communicated to the student in writing.
How do students apply?
Students apply on-line here.
What is the Application Deadline?
Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis. However, those submitted by September 1st will receive priority attention. The review process takes at least two weeks for first semester Freshmen and longer for students more advanced in their programs. Furthermore, it is very important that IP students needing language courses begin taking them as soon as possible. IP students receive priority when requesting permits for lower-level foreign language classes. Space fills quickly in these courses making it of the utmost importance to apply and be accepted in a timely manner; so, don't delay!
